Director: John Schlesinger

Cast: Vittorio Grigolo, Thomas Hampson, Sofia Fomina, Christine Rice, Sonya Yoncheva

Oscar-winning film director John Schlesinger's lavish production of Offenbach's popular opera fantastique.

Convinced that his four lovers have been whisked away by a succession of arch villains, drunken, tortured poet Hoffman is compelled to regale his buddies with the story of his romantic misfortunes. Drawn from three compelling stories by E.T.A. Hoffman, Offenbach's imaginative tall tale is filled with clockwork dolls, magical glasses, ghostly voices and sensual courtesans.

Something of an audience favourite, the ROH's sumptuous production was created by Academy Award-winning film director John Schlesinger and brings vividly to life a 19th century world of romance, comedy, mystery and menace. Charismatic young tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes the title role while superb baritone Thomas Hampson performs all four villains. The stunning showpiece numbers are also perfect vehicles for the vocal virtuosity of Sofia Fomina as the automaton Olympia, Christine Rice as the courtesan Giulietta and Sonya Yoncheva as the sickly singer Antonia.

Branagh Theatre Live: The Entertainer (2016)

Thu 27 Oct

Release Date: 21 Oct 2016

Director: Rob Ashford

Cast: Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh stars in John Osborne's modern classic set against the dying days of the music hall.

Kenneth Branagh's ambitious year-long residence at the Garrick Theatre got off to a flying start with the artistic and commercial triumph of The Winter's Tale with Judi Dench. The first of three plays to be broadcast live to cinemas, it took Ł1.6 million at the UK box office. Now Branagh's first season concludes with John Osborne's follow-up to his groundbreaking Look Back in Anger. This has at its centre the memorably sad, middle-aged figure of fading music-hall star Archie Rice, whose failing career is set against the backdrop of post-Colonial decline and personal tragedy. Archie was famously played by Laurence Olivier in the original production at the Royal Court Theatre in 1957. Branagh himself has frequently been compared to Olivier, so anticipation will be at fever pitch when he takes on this iconic role in his artistic associate Rob Ashford's production.

A sparkling new production of Mozart's much-loved romantic opera, featuring a cast of fresh young talent.

Wily, cynical Don Alfonso (Johannes Martin Kranzle) wagers that he can prove all women will be unfaithful if put to the test. Idealistic young soldiers Ferrando (Daniel Behle) and Guglielmo (Alessio Arduini) accept the bet. Pretending they've been sent to war, they disguise themselves. Each then sets out to seduce the other's fiancee - Dorabella (Angela Brower) and Fiordiligi (Corinne Winters) respectively.

Mozart's deliciously quirky comedy of love and fidelity boasts some of his most beautiful and evocative music. For the Royal Opera's new production of this timeless classic, director Jan Philipp Gloger imaginatively recasts Don Alfonso as a theatre director. Now the devious puppet master can use all the sets, props and tricks of his trade to create new scenes in which to challenge his lovers' affections. Semyon Bychkov conducts a cast of up-and-coming talent, including American soprano Corinne Winters.
