Director: John Schlesinger

Cast: Vittorio Grigolo, Thomas Hampson, Sofia Fomina, Christine Rice, Sonya Yoncheva

Oscar-winning film director John Schlesinger's lavish production of Offenbach's popular opera fantastique.

Convinced that his four lovers have been whisked away by a succession of arch villains, drunken, tortured poet Hoffman is compelled to regale his buddies with the story of his romantic misfortunes. Drawn from three compelling stories by E.T.A. Hoffman, Offenbach's imaginative tall tale is filled with clockwork dolls, magical glasses, ghostly voices and sensual courtesans.

Something of an audience favourite, the ROH's sumptuous production was created by Academy Award-winning film director John Schlesinger and brings vividly to life a 19th century world of romance, comedy, mystery and menace. Charismatic young tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes the title role while superb baritone Thomas Hampson performs all four villains. The stunning showpiece numbers are also perfect vehicles for the vocal virtuosity of Sofia Fomina as the automaton Olympia, Christine Rice as the courtesan Giulietta and Sonya Yoncheva as the sickly singer Antonia.

Release Date: 21 Oct 2016

Director: Rob Ashford

Cast: Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh stars in John Osborne's modern classic set against the dying days of the music hall.

Kenneth Branagh's ambitious year-long residence at the Garrick Theatre got off to a flying start with the artistic and commercial triumph of The Winter's Tale with Judi Dench. The first of three plays to be broadcast live to cinemas, it took Ł1.6 million at the UK box office. Now Branagh's first season concludes with John Osborne's follow-up to his groundbreaking Look Back in Anger. This has at its centre the memorably sad, middle-aged figure of fading music-hall star Archie Rice, whose failing career is set against the backdrop of post-Colonial decline and personal tragedy. Archie was famously played by Laurence Olivier in the original production at the Royal Court Theatre in 1957. Branagh himself has frequently been compared to Olivier, so anticipation will be at fever pitch when he takes on this iconic role in his artistic associate Rob Ashford's production.

Release Date: 15 Sep 2016

Director: Chen Shi-Zheng

Cast: Dragana Radakovic, Riccardo Massi, Hyeseoung Kwon, Conal Coad, John Longmuir, Benjamin Rasheed, Luke Gabbedy, David Lewis

Turandot; The Puccini classic, the final opera from one of the greats - created especially for the acclaimed Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour’s jaw-dropping outdoor water-stage performance, director Chen Shi-Zheng brings a unique perspective to this classic story

Turandot is the beautiful and powerful princess, who challenges her many suitors to answer three riddles on pain of death. Calŕf is a brave prince from a foreign land, who falls instantly in love with the princess. Despite the wishes of his exiled father and the pleas of a slave-girl who loves him, he rings the gong and declares his love for the princess. She presents her riddles, and in triumph, the unknown prince answers. Turandot despairs and the prince takes pity - offering the ice-cold princess a riddle of his own. But Calŕf’s riddle risks more than his own life - everyone else’s hangs in the balance.

Puccini’s Turandot is one of the greatest operas ever written: brilliant melodies for music-lovers, a gripping story for those that need action and drama, an exotic setting and plenty of movement for lovers of stagecraft and visual splendor. Not forgetting an incredible version of Nessun Dorma sung by Riccardo Massi. With a cast of seventy-eight, designer Dan Potra has created a stunning set for the spectacular harbour backdrop, including a 60-meter fire-breathing dragon, with a tail that morphs into the Great Wall, and a shimmering pagoda that stands 18 meters tall.

Steering away from traditional Chinese tropes, the director presents a China that is sleek and modern, with set elements and costumes that reflect the spirit of today. The production also features 187 hats and headdresses, 46 wigs and 30 sets of facial hair! Expect bold, dramatic, bright shapes and a set that will take your breath away. Run time: Approximately 2 hours 15 minutes, including a 15-minute interval. Performed in Italian with English subtitles.

Release Date: 08 Sep 2016

Director: Andrew Dominik

Cast: Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn P. Casey, Conway Savage, Barry Adamson, George Vjestica, Thomas Wydler, Jim Sclavunos

A unique one night only cinema event directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly), One More Time With Feeling will be the first ever opportunity anyone will have to hear Skeleton Tree, the sixteenth studio album from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. The film will screen in cinemas across the world on 8th September 2016, immediately prior to the release of Skeleton Tree the following day.

Originally a performance based concept, One More Time With Feeling evolved into something much more significant as Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s narration and improvised rumination.

Filmed in black-and-white and colour, in both 3D and 2D, the result is fragile, raw and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the darkness.
