Haiti Appeal

This earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, was the biggest and most destructive earthquake in 200 years. With the epicentre to the south of the capital city, Port-au-Prince, the earthquake affected an estimated 2 million people. As the earthquake struck at night, the exact number of people affected is as yet unclear, but preliminary reports indicate that thousands of people have been killed and the damage will affect the lives of well over 1 million people. Save the Children is already in Haiti, responding to the earthquake.

Emergencies have devastating consequences for children, separating them from their families and leaving them vulnerable to illness, hunger and abuse. The earthquake in Haiti has left hundreds of thousands of children without food, clean water and shelter, and they urgently need our help.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, with fragile infrastructure, high levels of insecurity and extreme poverty. With buildings, roads, airports and communication structures destroyed, reaching the most vulnerable children and families is extremely challenging. However, Save the Children has had a permanent presence in Haiti for over 20 years, and with an Emergency Advisor, Ian Rodgers and 58 staff already on the ground, we are poised and ready to respond. Ian told us that “children and their families have been forced from their homes into an extremely stressful and dangerous environment. The priority now is to provide food, clean water, shelter and medical assistance to children and their families.”
