XSCAPE CASTLEFORD NAMED TOP ATTRACTION IN THE UK
Xscape Castleford and British Airway’s London Eye have been ranked joint first
in a survey of paid-for attractions in the UK. The survey was conducted by VisitBritain,
the national tourism agency, and measured visits to 2,111 visitor attractions
in Britain in 2005.
Xscape Castleford and British Airway’s London Eye notched up a staggering 3¼m
visitors each, an attendance level way ahead of the rest of the paid attractions
market; Tower of London came third with 1.9million paying visitors.
Not only was Xscape Castleford the highest attended paid attraction it was the
seventh overall most popular attraction in the UK, ranking higher than the Natural
History Museum and the Science Museum (8th and 9th respectively), which are both free to enter.
Attractions outside London benefited from a warmer than average summer last year
and experienced an average 4% rise in popularity, but Xscape Castleford has shot
ahead of the rest of the market with a 6% rise on 2004’s figures.
